Pennsauken's geography does it a favor. The Betsy Ross Bridge runs off Route 90 at the edge of the township and lands on the Philadelphia side by Bridesburg, which puts the Fishtown bay about twenty minutes away — closer, on the clock, than plenty of Philadelphia neighborhoods are to each other. That matters when what you need is a windshield, because the difference between a job you can fit into a weekday morning and one that eats an entire day is mostly driving.
The other thing worth knowing about Pennsauken cars is where their damage comes from. This is a township of highways, circles and jughandles: Route 130, Route 73, Route 90 and the roads feeding down toward Admiral Wilson Boulevard. Trucks are constant, long stretches of the surface are old concrete, and the merges put you alongside vehicles you would rather not be alongside. Nearly everything we fill or replace for this side of the river started as a stone off somebody's rear tire at speed. Houses here have driveways, so break-ins are a smaller share of it — and a driveway is also the easiest place for the van to work, which is why, weather permitting, a fair number of Pennsauken jobs never cross the bridge at all.
Route 130 runs the length of the township as a divided highway where you turn right to go left, and Route 73 crosses it heading for the Tacony-Palmyra. Route 90 splits off toward the Betsy Ross Bridge and is the road that makes this township close to Fishtown. The southern end funnels traffic toward the Airport Circle and Admiral Wilson Boulevard. Between the highways the streets are residential and quiet, with driveways and garages, but almost no local trip stays local for long: getting anywhere in Pennsauken means joining a state route, and joining a state route means merging across lanes of truck traffic on concrete that has been patched for decades.

Second is the bridge deck: joints you can feel through the wheel are where a windshield that was already marked usually finishes breaking. Third is winter salt, which does not crack a screen but sands it, and a sanded screen shows up as glare on the first wet drive home rather than as a line you can point at. Fourth is low-speed damage — jughandles, tight lot maneuvering and shopping-center traffic take out mirror glass and quarter lights with dull regularity.
Route 90 west onto the Betsy Ross Bridge. On the Philadelphia side come off toward Aramingo Avenue and follow it southwest — it runs down through Port Richmond into Fishtown, and Frankford Avenue picks up from there, with Columbia Avenue crossing it a few blocks above Girard. Twenty minutes when the bridge is moving. I-95 south from the same interchange is the alternative and it is quicker when the highway is empty and slower when it is not.
