Frankford is a long way up Frankford Avenue and it still thinks of itself as its own town, which it was. The commercial strip runs for blocks around the El terminus at Bridge Street, buses turn in and out of the transportation center all day, and the streets nearby fill with cars belonging to people who parked once at half past seven and got on a train. Behind the avenue the housing changes every few blocks — rows with nothing, twins with driveways and rear garages — so the parking picture, and the damage picture with it, shifts street by street.
What comes out of that is a broad mix rather than one dominant job. Windshields cracked by stone off the avenue and the Boulevard. Side windows taken overnight, or during the day on the blocks where cars sit unattended from eight until six. Back glass on older cars that has been taped over for a month because nobody wanted to hear the price, which for the record is $200–$500 fitted for door, quarter or back glass and $250–$450 for a windshield. The drive down is fifteen to eighteen minutes on one road, and it is worth making once rather than twice: the number and the availability both get settled on the phone first.
Frankford Avenue runs the length of the neighborhood as a commercial street, with the El above its lower end, buses in the curb lane and cars pulling in and out of the spaces outside the shops. The residential streets range from wide twins with driveways to narrow rows with none. What they have in common is that every through route carries buses, which means stopping and starting over patched asphalt for most of any trip.
