Juniata is a Boulevard neighborhood, and the Boulevard is why most of its glass gets broken. Roosevelt Boulevard runs along the edge of it: twelve lanes split into inner express lanes and outer local ones, concrete slabs with joints between them, trucks in all of them, and junctions where three lanes of traffic cross three others. Anyone living here drives some of it every day. A stone thrown off a tire on that road arrives with real force, and half the time the driver never hears it land.
The housing is a different proposition from the river wards too. Juniata Park is rows and twins with driveways, rear garages and off-street space, so the cars sleep off the street and break-ins are a smaller share of what we see from up here. What replaces them is chips, and a lot of them: chips noticed when the sun is low, chips that have been there since August, chips two feet from the driver's eye. Filled while the break is still smaller than a quarter and out of the sight line, that is $60–$130 and about half an hour, and you drive away straight afterwards.
