A chip is a small crater blown out of the outer layer of laminated glass with air trapped underneath it, and that trapped air is what makes it travel. Every cold night and warm afternoon flexes the pane a fraction. Every seam and trench cut on Richmond Street gives it a shove. The legs of the star work outward from the crater a fraction of an inch at a time until one of them reaches the black band at the edge, and at that point the conversation is about a new windshield. Fresh and dry is what makes a fill hold and look right.
